Bye Bye Teething, Hello Sleep! Giveaway!

If you haven't slept in a few nights because of teething pain you NEED to read this!  Teething is one of the most challenging and painful times is a baby's young life and there is nothing worst for a mama than to see her baby in pain.  Teething can start at a very, very young age.  My little boy had his two front teeth at four months!  Excessive drooling, irritability, gumming objects including hands and fingers are all signs that your baby might be in the thick of it when it comes to teething.  We have compiled a list of everything you'll need to combat teething, soothe baby and have a good night's rest!

#1  Bye Bye Teething, Hello Sleep!
This teething tincture is a miracle worker!  It calms fussy babies and helps them settle down at night or for a nap!

#2 Baltic Amber Necklace
Baltic Amber has been used for ages to soothe minor pains, aches, and discomfort.  Best of all, it works wonders on teething babies!  Though we do not recommend wearing an Amber necklace around the neck to sleep, you can safely wrap one around baby's ankle and place a sock or footed pj's over the necklace so baby still gets the benefits of the amber but is not wearing something around their neck during sleep time.

#3 Chewbeads
I can't say enough about Chewbeads.  Babies love them...alot.  Chewbeads are made with FDA food grade silicone so it's gentle on baby's gum and emerging teeth so no worries about their poor little inflamed gums there!

Combine these three ingredients and bam!  You'll be sleeping in no time...(You can thank me later!).  So to help you celebrate your new sleep, GreenPath Baby is teeming up with Balm Baby to giveaway a bottle of Bye Bye Teething, Hello Sleep! to help your little one calm down and to give mama a break!  Simply enter through our rafflecopter for below!  Good luck!

Why Rockin' Green Works for Us!

At "Casa De GreenPath" we actually love using Rockin' Green.  We use it for our cloth diapers as well as all of our clothes.  It wasn't always that way though.  When we started cloth diapering, we used Tide.  Regular ol' Tide Powder.  I loved it.  We never had any issues whatsoever with our cloth diapers, no stains, ammonia smells or anything else.  It was awesome-that is, until they changed the formulation to include those wonderful little blue "Actilift Crystals".  To be honest, I did not even notice the change on the packaging, but within a week of using the new Tide on my diapers I had the dreaded barnyard smell.  I didn't figure it out right away, but I finally caught on once I saw the new packaging.  I decided to switch detergent to get rid of the stink, so I did a Funk Rock soak, and started using Rockin' Green.  It worked.  My diapers were finally clean again, and I have never gone back.  I use a scoop of the Funk Rock to keep the ammonia in check with every load during the cold pre-wash and do a full soak every month or so to keep things extra tidy.  This is a much greener option for my family and I especially my little one who has pretty severe eczema.  This detergent is much gentler on his clothes and diapers, and I'm ok with that.
Let's review our basic washing routine shall we?
  1. Prewash cloth diapers in cold water (use a scoop of Funk Rock to keep ammonia at bay)
  2. Hot wash with three scoops of Rockin Green Laundry Detergent (we use Classic Rock because we have regular city water, use a Water Quality Test Strip)
  3. Extra cold rinse
  4. Dry diapers on low or hang to dry
I found this little infographic which I think pretty much sums it up! LOVE!
And here is a handy little video about how to use the Rockin' Green Laundry Detergent with a Funk Rock Ammonia Bouncer Soak

We love the BumGenius Martin!

Even though GreenPath Baby is a retailer for BumGenius, we still get surprised by their amazingly imaginative prints!  I am happy to announce their newest release Martin!  The folks at BG based this diaper on Martin Johnson.  A photographer, a filmmaker, a naturalist, an author, and most of all - a voyager. From Africa to the South Pacific Islands, he embarked on various adventures with his wife by his side, researching and studying the wildlife and people of distant lands. Through photography, books and films, their findings captivated people all over the world and inspired the design of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.  We are familiar with the Animal Kingdom Lodge since we are only about 2.5 hours away from Disney World in FL, and we LOVE this diaper!  What a wonderful gender neutral print!  It's love a first roar, I mean sight....

We wanted to be part of this giveaway because we are moms, we love moms, and sometimes we take ourselves and the tremendous job we do for granted.  The running around can be intense, and having young children, making a house a home, being a wife, and working a (more than) full-time job can be overwhelming to say the least.  If I had a magic wand that could materialize anything I dreamt into being I would make it clean the house first.  Then fold and put away all the laundry.  Finally, I would have it "BUY ALL THE DIAPERS!!!!!!".  Yes, you heard me, my magic wand would have cleaning power and purchasing power, and by entering this giveaway you can too!! (At least the purchasing power, for the cleaning and folding, you're on your own...).  We are giving away a $25 Gift Certificate to the GreenPath Baby Cloth Diapering Store, where you will be able to choose from some of the most popular brands of cloth diapers out there like Moraki, Lalabye Baby, BumGenius, and more!  We want you to enjoy your Mother's Day, so get yourself a pedicure, hire a housekeeper for the weekend and relax!  We got you covered!

Cloth Diapering for Newbies!

Why would anyone ever consider cloth diapers when it is so easy to use disposable ones? Why would you fathom the idea of trying to pin the stinky diapers together and get baby poop all over your hands and sometimes hair? Why would you carry around a diaper full of stinky diapers when you can easily throw them away? All of these questions where directed at me when I made my biggest (and best) decision of wanting to go all gung ho and use cloth diapers on my daughter. These questions came not only from friends but from close family members, and although I was surprised to not get the support (not rightaway) that I expected, I stuck to my guns and began my cloth diapering journey.  I made this decision after finding out I was pregnant and talked to two of my friends that use cloth diapers. Both of these girls love using them and after they showed me how easy it is and how cute the designs are it was a no brainer! After realizing how interesting I thought cloth diapers were, my (loving) husband agreed to let me go out and buy a couple to see what I thought of using them myself.   I quickly realized how many decisions there are to cloth diapering and how easily overwhelming it can be. Who knew there were such things as AI1 (All-in-one), AI2 (All-In-Two), hybrids, pockets, prefolds, fitteds, covers, organic inserts, microfiber inserts and disposable liners. I was blown away by all the decisions and decided to write about the basics for all the moms (and dads) first time at cloth diapering.

Moraki Fluffles Stay-Dry AIO
AIO
The diapers that most closely resemble disposables are the All-In-Ones.  These diapers include brands such as bumGenius Freetime (great for overnight), bumGenius Elemental (one of my favorites) Moraki Fluffles, Moraki OneSize (OS) and Thirsties Duo AIO. These diapers contain a waterproof shell and a built-in absorbent layer, and Velcro (aplix) or snap fasteners. Usually these are stacked and sewn together  which makes the diapers wonderfully absorbent, but  may take a little longer to dry than other types of cloth diapers. These are a great buy for the parents or grandparents who want the ease of simply putting on the diaper with no extra steps involved.

Lalabye Baby Bamboo AI2
AI2
The All-in-Two and hybrids have a detachable snap-in or lay-in insert, which means that the shell can be reused for more than one diaper change.  You just remove the wet, dirty insert and snap in the new insert while using the same shell! (The shell is the waterproof outer part of the diaper) I have used these because the idea of just carrying around inserts as opposed to whole diapers fit my lifestyle more conveniently. The great thing about the removable insert is that you can add as many or as little inserts you feel necessary for your child. These inserts also have a tendency to dry more quickly than the AIOs. These brands include Softbums, Best Bottoms and LalabyeBaby.

Kawaii Charcoal Bamboo Pocket
Pocket Diapers
Pocket diapers include a waterproof shell with a pocket sewn inside, where an insert can be stuffed in.  The waterproof outer usually made of Polyurethane Laminate (PUL) or Thermoplastic Polyrethane (TPU), and a stay-dry inside layer made of wicking materials such as microfleece, minky, or suede-cloth. The two layers are sewn together with an opening (pocket, usually at the back but sometimes in the front or middle) to add an absorbent insert (or two).  These diapers are great for first time cloth diapering parents, they just include the extra step of stuffing the shell. Types of pocket diapers include Rumparooz, bumGenius 4.0, and Kawaii.

Second prize is a huge package of glassware from Mighty Nest to help you swap your kitchen plastic for glass! This package includes 8 pieces of glass food storage, a set of glass measuring cups and 2 glass bistro pitchers!  Of course, our giveaway would have something to do with cloth diapers! (How did you guess??)

GreenPath Baby is giving away a $25 Gift Certificate to our cloth diaper store to help you try cloth diapers risk free!  We love that cloth diapering is something we all can do with our babies to conserve our planet as well as their skin and health-and it ain't too bad on the eyes ether!  I really think if more parents were willing to give modern cloth diapers a chance, they would be surprised at how easy they are to use.  Imagine what the world would be like if everyone cloth diapered their children?  How much longer would our natural resources last for our children to use?  Every decision we make whether we like it or not have consequences, we pass on values.  Being "green" is not an all or nothing decision either, we can all take small, medium, or large steps towards helping the environment.  Of course, we only diaper our children for a small part of their lives, but the impact can be great given that only one disposable takes up to 450 years to decompose.  I love this chart, it is one that I look at often when trying to distinguish the environmental impact of my choices.

So make your resolutions, whether big or small and stick to them!  And enter our giveaway for a chance to win some cloth diapers to help you accomplish that goal!

Cloth Diapers and Rash - Best Diaper Rash Creams to use with your Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diapers are great for baby's skin since they are made out of fabric and do not contain the irritants known to be found in traditional disposable diapers.  But how do you deal with a diaper rash while using cloth diapers?  With all of the non-cloth diaper safe creams that use zinc-oxide (which is not very cloth diaper friendly, but does the job when it comes to rashes) how do you decide what really works for rashes?  In this post, we will talk about the best natural products for "traditional" diaper rash, not the monstrous bumpy/pimply yeast rash, for more information on cloth diapers and yeast rash, see this post.

Best for everyday use
Hosie Naturals Butt Balm.  All natural, safe for a brand new baby, made with certified organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Rosehip Oil, Calendula, and essential oils of Lavender and Chamomile.  This is great for using with every diaper change and for mild to moderate rashes.  Also works great for dry skin, bug bites, and mild burns.  Safe for cloth diapers.

Best for Coconut Oil Lovers
Eco Sprout's The Coconut Stick.  Talk about having the best of both worlds!  Having Coconut Oil on a Stick is great way to have the efficacy of Coconut Oil and mild rash treatment exactly where you need it without having to get your hands messy.  Also great for everyday use or mild rashes, the Coconut Stick makes an awesome on the go product to keep in your diaper bag for those quick changes.

Best Barrier Cream
The Grandma El's Diaper Rash Remedy and prevention is a great barrier cream and treatment for moderate diaper rash.  It is cloth diaper safe and glides on very smoothly on baby's skin.  It works especially well for babies who are getting rashes from going #2 often because it blocks the waste matter from adhering to the skin.

Best Natural Scent
The Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm smells deliciously fresh which is an added bonus due to the fact that you don't get the "pamper's powder smell" with cloth diapers.  This balm smells fresh and so clean.  It contains Tea Tree oil, Calendula, Lavender, Myrrh, is cruelty free and has been clinically tested.  I love this stuff.  It is also vegan, which can be hard to find in traditional baby products.

All of these remedies are great, especially when using them in conjunction with cloth diapers.  The best way to prevent diaper rash from occurring in the first place is by changing him/her often.  Let baby run around naked!  A little fresh air feels really great on a sore bum!  Use a good wipe solution that contains calming Witch Hazel and Chamomile to keep baby's skin naturally moisturized in between changes.
